My Jeep Build Out

Because of my recent posts about my roof top tent on Facebook some people have been asking about my build.  I bought a 2015 Wrangler Sport in June of 2018 with 55k miles. It’s my second Jeep and my first Wrangler.  In the fall of 2018 I started camping with it and camped with gear I already had.  Late in the fall of 2018 I decided to do a six month mission trip in my Jeep to do outreach to the homeless in 30 cities and overland between each city. The take off date was June 6th of 2019. Majority of the build was done in the spring of 2019. Prior to the build I did various test trips with my Jeep to Quebec, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Niagara Falls, Tennessee & Key West.  After these test trips I knew exactly what was needed for the build.  From the beginning of my build it was always about making sure gear would not go to far above the sidewalls of that cargo area so I could overland with the rear windows out or the top down. 

I’m a Pastor and my Jeep is equipped to do church services without needing 110v power. On my 6 month trip I did church services in Alaska, Skid Row (LA) and Key West.  So not everybody needs all the gear I have. 🙂 

The trip was a complete success and returned December 1st. I did outreach in 46 cities and gave out blankets, hygiene kits, food and clothes to the homeless in cooperation with Jeep and off road clubs in each city. Roadtrip was over 27,000 miles and I visited 34 states. No major problems with the Jeep and I saw some pretty rugged terrain.  I lived in the Jeep for 21 days on my way to Alaska from Denver. The only thing I added during the trip was a Superchips Flascal, Garmin InReach Mini, SureCall Cell Boaster and 2 traction tracks.

Mission Accomplished!

  Yesterday I arrived in Dar Salaam, Tanzania and last night the car rental agency picked up the Land Cruiser. I’m not going to lie, it was a great relief when they picked it up. I didn’t post all the issues I had with the Land Cruiser, but they included replacing the clutch twice, replacing both batteries, thr spare tire rim and various issues with the electrical system, stove, bulbs, door latches, windows and tire leaks.  Although I spent a lot of time working on repairs of the Land Cruiser, I couldn’t imagine doing the trip in any other vehicle because of the very poor roads in Kenya and Tanzania. The Land Cruiser was an absolute beast, everybody knows how to fix them and parts are readily available. In 28 days, I drove 9,924 km, visited 7 churches, 5 wells, 3 schools, 2 orphanages, 1 clinic and gave out 200 storybook bibles. (Although, 13 of the storybook bibles were given to 8 Tanzanian Police Officers instead of the cash they requested.) I also shared a message at 3 churches.  To

54 Cities in 300 Days!

Yesterday was our last outreach to help the homeless. Over the last 300 days and over 28,000 miles, Mission For Hope & Christian Jeep Association has given out thousands of blankets, hygiene kits and Bibles along with lots of clothing, food, water and prayers in cities across the United States & Canada.  THANK YOU to all the people who encouraged, supported and prayed for me the last 300 days. Thank you Beantown Blankets for donating thousands of blankets and shipping them into all the cities.  Next… Tuesday I fly to Kenya for month to help the children in Kenya and Tanzania get better access to clean water, healthcare and education.  Three days after I get back from Africa I leave on a 5 month trip in my Jeep to 10 states to attend 18 Jeep events that the Christian Jeep Association will be attending.  Thank you for your encouragement, support and prayers for my next two trips!  Acts 1:8 ‭

My route so far in Africa

This if my route so far in Kenya and Tanzania. Right now I’m in the southwest part of Tanzania where the gold arrow is. I’m heading east to Dar Saalem this week.  My Garmin stopped working a few days after I arrived in Kenya a few weeks ago. I’m using Gaia and it’s not my favorite for tracking and definitely not very useful in Kenya and Tanzania for finding places to camp.
